Distance is a song is about desire for intimacy and connection, at a time when it is being challenged on many accounts. When writing this song somewhere in my mind I was thinking about how our everyday handshake, social kiss, hug has become altered dramatically. No matter what your situation is whether you are single, coupled or in a family household the way we relate to each other socially has changed and carries this underlined tension.
Yet these thought were all unconscious since the song came about very intuitively as I was driving my car home. The song distance germinated from a place of longing for fearless touch, embrace, dance and connection. I have never composed a tango before but the melody came about this way, which has influenced the rhythm of the song. Tangos naturally express tension and passion, a Latin social dance which would be forbidden publicly today as all dances.
I presented the melody to Steve Briggs and he wrote and recorded the arrangement for the guitar and bass. He sent me the files electronically for me to sing my vocals over. He captured the spirit of the song so evocatively that it gave me the freedom and inspiration to sing this song exactly as if no one was watching, without any inhibitions, in Mitch Girio’s basement recording studio where I sang the song in a closed off separate room. Rebecca Hennessy then laid in her trumpet tracks in her studio, Gary Craig recorded the drums on his own and Rebecca Campbell recorded her harmony vocals separately. Mitch Girio listened to what the song was asking and mixed and mastered the track. We were all carefully distanced in our recording process but somehow deeply connected to the intention of the song.
