about

End Of An Era, by Isabel & The Uncommons features Isabel Fryszberg (isabelfryszberg.com) on lead vocals and rhythm guitar; Rebecca Campbell (Sultans of String, Jane Siberry, the SPECIAL INTEREST group) on vocals; Cleave Anderson (Forgotten Rebels, Blue Rodeo) on drums; John Switzer (Jane Siberry) on bass; Bob Cohen (Jessie Winchester) on electric and acoustic guitar; and special guest, Asher Ettinger on piano.

This project was created in isolation, and collectively and methodically stitched together remotely. The recording was arranged by Asher Ettinger and mixed and mastered by John Switzer. The video, conceived and directed by Isabel and edited by Aaron Albert, pieces together multiple selfie videos of each musician performing the song, while carrying on with life during the pandemic. Rebecca Campbell’s bold, handmade graphics appear throughout, animating the song’s key lyric phrases.

The music sounds like a carefree pop song — try to resist swaying your hips — yet hidden beneath its happy tone lies an unsettling story. End Of An Era speaks about something that we all care about: not losing live music.

Isabel Fryszberg wrote End Of An Era with Rebecca Campbell and Asher Ettinger a couple of years ago, as high rents began to force independent music venues and mom and pop stores to close. Little did they know the prescience of this song in the current context, as many music venues and stores shut down due to COVID-19, and we all wonder if, when, and how we will ever return to performing and hearing live music again.

As lockdown and quarantine measures endure, and we are faced with what feels like endless social isolation, we are forced to adapt our roles and change our occupations. In this moment of great uncertainty, the arts are helping us find new ways to connect, and address existential questions in meaningful ways. Art flourishes when its creators are tasked to forge new paths for well-being. Let End Of An Era play a part in our collective healing process, as it brings joy while shedding light on a serious issue.

lyrics

End of An Era by Isabel Fryszberg, Asher Ettinger, Rebecca Campbell

It's an end of an era and everything's closing
A club and a store and everyone's posing
There’s a price to be paid, for a
world to be saved. As I’m
staying at home sipping my netflicks

Bridge/chorus
I don’t want to lose live music.
I don’ wanna lose dancing with my neighbour.
I don’t wanna lose this connection
The 3rd Dimension, in 3 dimensions

Vs 2
You talk about nothing, but liking and sharing
You fight for survival hunting and puffing.
As you turn out the lights and there’s no sleep tonight.
As I walk without sight watching my netflicks.

Bridge/chorus
Solo
I don’t want to lose live music.
I don’ wanna lose dancing with my neighbour.
I don’t wanna lose this connection
The 3rd Dimension, in 3 dimensions

Vs 3

Everything's changing, nothing familiar anymore
The city’s a suburb, I can’t afford to live there no more
Life’s just a bore
So I shut my door
Turn out the light, turn on my netflicks.

Bridge/chorus
I don’t want to lose live music.
I don’ wanna lose dancing with my neighbour.
I don’t wanna lose this connection
The 3rd Dimension, in 3 dimensions
The 3rd Dimension, In 3 dimensions
The 3rd Dimension

Isabel Fryszberg Toronto, Ontario

In the old days tracks like these were produced with a nod towards each being a single 45 rpm material – released as stand alone hits. It’s ingenious how each song has that quality—NoDepression Roots Magazine
